Thickness and composition of native oxides and near-surface regions of Ni superalloys

The surface chemistry and thickness of the native oxide, hydroxide, modified sub-surface layer three Ni superalloys (alloy 59, 625, 718) were determined by synchrotron X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) Reflectivity (XRR). Taking advantage radiation techniques, a procedure for normalizing photoelectron intensity was employed, which allowed accurate quantitative analysis revealing total oxide all samples 12–13 Å, hydroxide 2–3 alloy 20–35 Å. results compared to structural atomic models suggesting that corresponds four planes metal cations in matrix. XPS data revealed oxides enriched Cr3+, Mo(4,5,6)+, Nb5+, while no detected. mainly contained Ni2+ Cr3+ hydroxide. depleted Cr, Fe, Mo, Nb. obtained composition can be explained using thermodynamics, it found correlates with enthalpy formation elements alloys. Finally, advantages determination are discussed.
